Mecalux assists Gerresheimer in optimizing the logistics of medical devices in the USA with two automated warehouses

Delivering medical devices to healthcare units in a timely manner is essential for the health and well-being of patients. Recently, Mecalux supported Gerresheimer, an innovative supplier of systems and solutions and a global partner for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and cosmetics industries to optimize the logistics of its medical devices in the United States. As part of the expansion of the production and logistics capacity of its factory in Peachtree City, Georgia, Gerresheimer contracted Mecalux for two automated warehouses for pallets. This dual investment responds to the strong increase in demand for medical devices and reinforces its growth strategy based on automation.

“The expansion of our unit in Peachtree City represents a crucial step to strengthen our presence in the United States and bring us even closer to our healthcare clients,” explains Tobias Gebhard, Global Head of Smart Factory Automation for Gerresheimer's medical systems. The project includes the creation of over 400 new jobs, the addition of state-of-the-art clean rooms, the commissioning of highly automated production lines, and the modernization of our entire internal logistics.

After years of operating with manual processes, Gerresheimer opted for the automation of its material flows to achieve accuracy, safety, and efficiency, critical factors in the medical industry. “In an environment where every component must be handled with the utmost care, automation brings a new dimension of control and reliability,” says Gebhard.

Mecalux's Easy WMS Warehouse Management System monitors the movement of over 30 references of medical devices from the production lines. The system assigns a location to each product based on its demand level and sends specific instructions to the stacker cranes for its movement. This ensures the immediate availability of all devices when needed and maintains comprehensive real-time control of each stored unit.

This project, the result of close collaboration and joint work between Gerresheimer and Mecalux, lays the foundation for more innovative and efficient logistics, ready to drive the sustainable growth of the company in the demanding medical sector.
