Closing a business without losses: 8 tips to turn assets into revenue

Closing a business, whether due to a change of plans, the end of a cycle, or necessity, is always a challenge. The decision itself carries emotional and strategic weight, and it becomes even more complex when it involves the disposal of assets and equipment accumulated throughout the operation. However, what many entrepreneurs don't realize is that this inventory can be transformed into an excellent opportunity for financial return.

Kitchen equipment, furniture, office supplies, electronics, industrial machinery, and even utility vehicles can be resold quickly and securely through specialized digital platforms. This resale market has grown rapidly and sustainably, driven by the increasing interest in cost-effective solutions.

study by Thredup indicates that the secondhand goods sector is growing, on average, three times faster than the traditional clothing sector. By 2027, segments such as thrift stores are expected to double in size, generating around US$350 billion. In Brazil, OLX revealed that 61% of consumers already use online platforms to sell used items as a way to generate extra income. On average, each person owns R$2,113 worth of items that could be monetized, a source of idle capital waiting to be utilized.

In this scenario, closing a business doesn't have to mean total loss. On the contrary: with planning and strategy, the dismantling process can become a smart step towards financial recovery.

“We are living in a time when consumers and small entrepreneurs are more attentive to cost-benefit. Auctions and marketplaces are practical alternatives for acquiring and reselling products without paying the full price,” highlights Thiago da Mata, CEO of Kwara.

Why invest in resale?

In addition to financial gain, reselling used assets also strengthens the circular economy by extending the lifespan of equipment and preventing the premature disposal of materials in good condition.

Reverse logistics, a key component in this process, allows products to return to the production cycle through reuse, recycling, or proper disposal. Despite its importance, Brazil still faces bottlenecks: according to Abrelpe, about 45% of waste that could be reused ends up being lost, generating an estimated annual loss of R$ 14 billion.

Adopting sustainable practices not only reduces operational costs and optimizes resources, but also strengthens the company's image, even during the closing phase, as a socially and environmentally responsible organization.

“Entrepreneurs who choose to resell their assets alleviate the financial impact of closure and also encourage sustainable practices, in addition to contributing to small businesses that seek quality equipment at affordable prices,” Thiago emphasizes.

8 tips to turn your business assets into revenue:

1) Make a detailed inventory

List all items available for sale: furniture, appliances, tools, equipment, spare parts, and the like. The more complete the inventory, the more attractive it will be to buyers.

2) Assess the state of conservation

Well-maintained items tend to generate more interest and fetch better deals. Take good photos, document any wear and tear, and, if possible, make minor repairs before listing them.

3) Choose trustworthy platforms

Choose websites with a good reputation, security, and national reach. Kwara, Enjoei, OLX, and Facebook Marketplace are popular and effective options.

4) Be transparent in your descriptions

Please provide the brand, model, usage time, and actual condition of the item. This honesty helps build trust and avoid future complaints.

5) Set realistic prices based on the market

Research prices offered at auctions and similar marketplaces. "The goal is to move inventory efficiently, not to maximize profit at any cost," advises Thiago.

6) Take advantage of the reach of the platforms

Specialized environments already have an audience willing to buy. Kwara auctions, for example, attract interested parties and benefit from promotion on social media and in the press, optimizing the reach of their products.

7) Sell in lots when possible

Grouping similar items (such as chairs, kitchenware, or electronics) speeds up the sales process and can increase the average bid value.

8) Coordinate transportation and pickup effectively

Logistics vary depending on the platform used. Some leave shipping to the buyer, others to the seller. Coordinate beforehand to avoid surprises and ensure a smooth transaction.

“Closing a business can actually represent the beginning of a new phase. And selling your equipment strategically makes all the difference in the final balance. What often seems like a problem can become immediate liquidity; you just need to know how and where to sell,” concludes Thiago da Mata.
