Evolution of Pix with MED 2.0 requires a new security posture and e-commerce risk management

Pix reached a scale that transformed the way companies and consumers move money in Brazil. According to data released by the Central Bank in 2026, more than 170 million individuals already use the system, which recorded billions of transactions and moved trillions of reais in a single month. At the same time that the payment method is consolidated as the centerpiece of digital commerce, the improvement of the Special Return Mechanism, known as MED 2.0, increases the need for companies to pay attention to risks related to fraud, traceability and financial management.

For Nassor de Oliveira Ramos, member of the Risk/Compliance team at UNICOPAG, the evolution of the mechanism changes the perception of security that accompanied the expansion of Pix and requires a new attitude from companies that receive digital payments. “For a long time, Pix was treated by operations as a means of payment in which immediate settlement also represented a type of definitive closure of the transaction. With the advancement of return and tracking mechanisms, this perception needs to be revised. The business now needs processes capable of monitoring the transaction beyond the moment the money enters the account, with more control, traceability and responsiveness in the face of fraud or dispute situations.”

The movement occurs precisely when the Central Bank expands the system's security tools. MED 2.0 was developed to allow the tracking of funds transferred in fraud beyond the first account that received the money, while MED self-service now facilitates the dispute of fraudulent transactions directly through financial institutions' applications. For e-commerce, developments reinforce the importance of monitoring and risk management structures, especially in high-volume and low-margin operations, in which isolated occurrences can generate significant financial impacts.

In this context, the discussion is no longer restricted to banking security and begins to reach the sustainability of digital operations, which need to balance receipt speed with control and response capacity. In Nassor's assessment, the change represents a maturation of the payments ecosystem and requires merchants, platforms and intermediaries to rethink their processes. “The advancement of MED should not only be interpreted as an increase in risk for those who sell, but as a sign of market maturity. Pix's speed continues to be a competitive advantage, but it needs to be accompanied by transactional intelligence, monitoring and partners prepared to act in the face of events that can directly impact cash and the continuity of the operation.
