Why does AI cite Reddit more than your company blog?

Wikipedia and Reddit account for more than 25% of ChatGPT citations in the United States, according to "The 5W Citation Source Audit" report. This phenomenon is neither a bug nor a contractual privilege, but rather a sign of what counts as authority in the age of generative search.

To begin, I suggest a test. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google with AI Overviews and ask what the best product in your category is. Count how many times the answer mentions a Reddit thread or a user review. Then, count how many times it mentions the blog your company has maintained for years, with an editorial calendar, approved content, and a dedicated SEO team.

The score is humiliating for the corporate side. And the data indicates that this is no coincidence; this result is related to the aforementioned 5W report, highlighting an important point about the same survey: traditional media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Bloomberg don't even appear among the 20 most cited sources. In other words, journalistic brands that cost hundreds of millions to maintain are losing out, in the diet of sources of a particular language model, to anonymous posts from ordinary users.

The most practical explanation would be to point to the licensing agreements that transformed Reddit into an official data provider for tech giants like Google and OpenAI. But this narrative doesn't entirely hold up. If the issue were only access to content, the models would show similar citation patterns, but the data shows exactly the opposite. ChatGPT uses social content with a much lower weight (around 7%) than Perplexity (around 31%). If it were just a matter of contract, the numbers would be similar.

The difference lies elsewhere. Language models prioritize conversational, solution-oriented, and concrete text—that detail only those who have actually used it know, the edge case, the "I bought it and regretted it because of this." The average corporate content is the opposite of that, as it has an institutional bias, is legally approved, lacks friction, and lacks specificity. Therefore, AI isn't rewarding Reddit for laziness. It's rewarding a type of signal that corporate content teams have been trained, for years, to eliminate.

Behavior varies by platform. As mentioned earlier, Perplexity, which processes around 780 million queries per month, derives approximately 31% of its citations from social media, with Reddit accounting for roughly 24% of that total. Google AI Overviews accounts for 13%, while ChatGPT maintains a more conservative stance, prioritizing sources of structured authority.

Authority that declares itself vs. authority that proves itself.

Google's EEAT concept (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) gained traction with generative search, with the first E, for Experience, taking on real practical weight. A well-voted community post is a distilled experience because it has a date, name, and the detail that the manual lacks. The product page states that the company is the best. And the forum determines if that's true. In this context, the authority that AI recognizes is not what the brand declares, but what third parties corroborate. Corporate blogs are a declaration, but forums, repositories, and reviews are corroboration.

The strategic response, however, does not involve colonizing communities with fake posts. Astroturfing, a marketing and communication technique that consists of artificially creating popular support or consensus, is ineffective and unethical in this context. Communities quickly detect coordinated accounts, and the public callout becomes authentic, highly engaging content—exactly the type that AI tends to cite. The risk is asymmetrical, and the return is low.

The key is to make the communication itself as useful, specific, and verifiable as the best testimonial from a satisfied customer. Honest FAQs, clear documentation, comparisons that acknowledge where the competitor excels. And measuring presence separately in each engine, as Perplexity, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Gemini have distinct source diets and require different tactics.

The summary is straightforward. The AI cites Reddit more than your blog because Reddit, on average, is more honest than your blog. Anyone who understands this stops trying to deceive the machine and, consequently, begins to deserve the citation.
