Only 22% of SMEs use AI in a structured way in Brazil, according to a G4 study

The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Brazil is still far from reaching operational maturity, despite the strong recognition of its strategic importance. This is what a study conducted in 2026 by G4, the largest Brazilian platform for corporate solutions for SMEs, which heard entrepreneurs from all over the country, shows.

According to the survey, only 22% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) use AI in a structured way in their operations. The data contrasts with the perception of relevance: 59,1% of entrepreneurs claim that the technology will be crucial for the success of their businesses as early as 2026. Still, 53% recognize the importance of AI, but say they do not know how to implement it, while 38% admit to operate with processes considered “artisanAL”, based on spreadsheets and dependent on key people.

The scenario shows a mismatch between intention and execution, “gap” that has limited the advancement of digital transformation in the segment. For Tallis Gomes, co-founder and president of G4, the challenge is no longer in awareness, but in practical application. According to the executive, companies have already understood that they need to incorporate AI in everyday life, but still lack the direction, training and appropriate tools to turn this ambition into concrete results.

As a complement to this diagnosis, an Adobe report, which evaluated the use of artificial intelligence by SMEs in Brazil between 2023 and 2025, shows that smaller companies faced similar obstacles, especially in data governance, technical training and clarity of return on investment.

On the other hand, the data show that AI is already a reality among SMEs. Microsoft research shows that 75% of Brazilian SMEs are optimistic about the impact of AI on their businesses, while a survey of Sebrae indicates that 44% of small entrepreneurs already use some type of artificial intelligence, signaling that adoption is ongoing 'albeit in an initial and poorly structured way.

The combination of these data suggests that artificial intelligence is no longer just a promise and has come to occupy a central role in the competitiveness of companies. However, the ability to transform this technology into real gains in productivity and efficiency still depends on progress in operational maturity, team building and strategic integration.

In this context, experts point out that SMEs that can structure the use of AI with a focus on practical application, continuous training and rapid value generation tend to come out ahead 'DE consolidating competitive advantage in an increasingly data-driven market.
